30 steps to finding your dream job in less than 6 months

# 13 – Know what you get paid for

“Most entrepreneurs know that following passion is not enough to become successful and wealthy. The key is to  find people who want to pay you for doing what you are good at and passionate about.”

Here we are again talking about your dream job. I find it ever so exciting, don’t you? Have you discovered your dream workplace in the previous coffee break exercise? Have you got a clear picture of the person, organisation or company you want to work for and with? Fantastic. This is usually the simplest step and most people know straight away. If you don’t however, here is a little tip. Find what you don’t want first, then think of the opposite. Which people, businesses or organisations would you hate working for? Then think of the opposite. Cool, so now you know who you want to work for. What’s next?

“Every person can be successful, wealthy and happy. Successful people find the people they want to work for and work out what their biggest headache is.”

You see following your passion and doing what you are good at is not enough. To monetise your passion, you also need to find what is your employer willing to pay you for? The first thing that wanna-be entrepreneurs learn is finding what their customers want, need and what they are willing to pay for. This means finding their problems, frustrations, desires and delivering the solutions for them. The same goes for your employer. Your employer right now faces a problem that needs fixing and they want to recruit you to do that. Someone is already out there right now who will be happy to pay you for taking their headache away. Your job is to figure out what their headache is.

Step #13 coffee break exercise:

  • Zero to dream jobImagine yourself in your dream job. You are at your dream workplace, doing what you love and doing what you are good at. Think about what gives your employer constantly a headache? List down at least 10 problems that frustrate him or her.
  • Which problem brings your employer the biggest headache? Now look at these problems again and look a the one that causes all of the other problems? Can you deliver a solution to sort it out?
  • Share about your discoveries with your buddy. Which headaches can your friend take away? Find out and continue to support each other in finding your dream job.
