“Job titles are nothing else but labels.”

So how did it go with your previous coffee break exercise (#13)? Have you managed to decode what can you do for others? What causes their headache at work and what difference can you make to them through helping or serving? Sometimes our thinking gets constrained through our job titles, labels that we believe define who we are, what we do and or we should do. Job titles are nothing else but labels. They do not define who we are and what you can do. If you are bored, tired or simply no longer inspired with your job title, isn’t it time to change it? Re-create it or upgrade it?

Every person can be successful, wealthy and happy. Your abilities are not defined by your job title. You define who you are and what difference you can make.”

Whether you like it or not, job title is a label. It’s a label that you accept with a job. Defining who you are and your dream job title can be tricky for some of us. I really get that. To make it simpler, think about how would you love to be known by others. If you were at a party and your friends were going to introduce you to somebody, how would you like to be introduced so you feel proud and excited about who you are? Imagine the situation and observe, how does it make you feel? Does it make you smile? You can write as many inspiring job titles as you like and see which one resonates with you most. The one that makes you smile most is usually the winner 🙂

Step #14 coffee break exercise:

  • Zero to dream jobThink about your dream job. List down all job titles that really inspire you.
  • Give each of these job titles score from 1 to 10 based on your smile – how much they inspire you and how much they make you smile? Which job titles makes you smile most?
  • Share about your discoveries with your buddy.  Supporting each other will help you find your dream job and it’s fun to do it together.
