“Worried about being different? Being unique? Your greatness is always hiding in your uniqueness.”
Hi again and thank you for reading! So how did you get on with your weaknesses in the last exercise (#19)? Perhaps it was easy for you and perhaps it was not. As human beings we can be very self-critical and harsh on ourselves. One thing always surprises me when I am coaching my clients. People often come with a big list of things they can’t do well, things they would criticise themselves for but they struggle to see their own greatness, their own uniqueness. I don’t want to speculate on reasons why this is happening. My intention is to inspire you to look at your uniqueness, your greatness.
“Every person can be successful, wealthy and happy. It starts with discovering your own greatness and living up to it.”
So why is discovering your own uniqueness important when it comes to looking for your dream job? If you look at the business or organisation you want to work for, they will have a unique selling point – it is that “something” (whether it’s a business concept, values, ethics, culture etc) that makes you want to work for them. The same principle works for you. As a candidate, you also have something “special” or something “unique” that makes your potential employer say “Yes, I want to hire this person!” Your job is to discover what that is. What others struggle with but you don’t?
Step #20 coffee break exercise:
- Think about your dream job. Think about what makes you different from others? What gives you a competitive advantage? What can you do better than others?
- Focus on listing at least 10 items that make you unique – consider unique skills, attitudes, advantages, situations where you coped extremely well, situations where you produced better results than others …
- Share about your discoveries with your buddy. Supporting each other will help you find your dream job and it’s fun to do it together.

What do others struggle with but you don’t? Now is your time to discover what is it that makes you unique? You have already started taking first steps to achieving your goal, to follow your dream. Keep going. Always happy to read about your discoveries. Feel free to leave a comment below.

Interesting.. Going to do the what makes me unique exercise with my coffee!
Please share on Winning Women Essex today, this is valuable to the community.
Thank you, Rosemary. Glad to hear that. What did you discover? 😉
ps: Shared in the Winning Women Facebook group as well.
Great task. I think it’s difficult to think about one’s uniqueness and positive traits. But it’s definitely worth it. Your ideas are also great boosters for my self-esteem ☺
Thank you, Susann. Glad to hear the exercise is uplifting and helpful. And please do remember to chat with your friends, colleagues … Asking others what they find unique about us, often helps us see a new angle or skills we take for granted.
We’re hard wired to criticise and belittle ourselves. Much easier than talking ourselves up. Useful coffee break exercises which made me think.
I agree Shan and thank you very much for your acknowledgment x
What you have written is so true. As humans we tend to think about and focus upon all of the negative. My recent blog post is about getting rid of negative thinking. Your post and mine go hand in hand. For me, sitting down and making a list of all the things I do well is such a boost. My list entails the simplest, such as mopping my wood floors, to the more difficult, such as stopping and giving first aid at the scene of a horrible car accident. More people need to focus on what they CAN do rather than what they can’t. Thank you!
What a wonderful comment and even more beautiful list of unique skills. Especially giving first aid at the car accident, something I would find very challenging. Thank you very much for sharing, Julie.
