“Monetise … because your work may be worth millions, but you only get paid what you are willing to accept.

Have you ever felt being underpaid? Despite working longer hours, putting more effort in, going that extra mile to get noticed … All that effort for nothing more in return, especially without seeing the higher salary on your payslip. Feeling underpaid often leaves us feeling unappreciated, frustrated or disempowered, almost as if we did not deserve more.  This post is not about blaming yourself, criticising your manager or company for your wage. This post is about looking at your salary from a different angle and I hope it will inspire you to learn how to monetise your skills and talents so that one day you can earn a higher income and the salary you want.

“Earning higher income is not a question of deserving. It’s a question of assessing your return on investment and mastering your negotiating skills.

If you were running a business and wanted to generate a higher profit, you would be looking at assessing how much return you generate on your investment. In simple words, how much you get back for what you put in. Imagine that your skills, talents and knowledge were your investment and your salary is your return on investment. If your return (income or salary) does not grow in line with your knowledge, skills and experience, wouldn’t you want to change that? Wouldn’t you want to explore and learn how to monetise your skill set and talents to increase your salary?

Step #27 coffee break exercise:

  • Blog pictureThink about your dream job and your salary. Write down your current salary (if you are currently working) and then the salary that you would like to earn.
  • Now think about how could you get there? Write down a list for the following – think what are:
    • 5 actions that you can take in order to reach your desired salary?
    • 3 skills that you already have for which other companies or employers could pay you higher income?
    • 3 organisations or companies that are offering a higher salary than your current one (without the need to relocate).
  • What is the highest salary available in the market for your current skills set? Do your research – online or ask your recruitment agent. Remember to ask for help if you need it. Supporting each other with your friend or partner will make it easier and more fun.
