Today I was preparing playbook and emails for the 30 day Zero to Dream Job Challenge, 30 steps to finding more clarity, freedom in your career and landing your dream job. The topic for day 6 – Get clear on your big why  – is so powerful, that it left me re-visit my own career, business, life goals and connect with what I care about in my work.

Finding your “Why” is an incredibly powerful self-motivator and catalyst for change. Your Why will help you find the determination and energy to make things happen, yet when exploring our “Why” can bring up conflicting beliefs or perhaps even the fear of failure. I often write about coaching techniques, powerful tools and methods but today I have decided to connect with my Big why and share it with you.

“What’s my BIG WHY?

Ever since I was a little girl, I was fascinated by teaching, learning and education in general, but like most kids I really got bored at school even though I did well. I was lucky to have parents who let me choose my own career direction and as I always wanted to start my own business one day, I was drawn to study at a business college and later on finance at the University of Economics. I always thought I will be helping people to save more money and pay less taxes. This was my big why at the time.

I was happy with my career, but it was in my late twenties when I started to notice that there must be something more fulfilling than number crunching. I started to feel stuck in a “golden cage” – a career that paid me well, yet I was missing my freedom, self-expression and contributing to something purposeful. I have started to recognise how much people feel drained, unhappy and exhausted in their work. I thought that was the right time to revisit my big why. It started to evolve from something very generic like:

  • having a purpose-full job or business supporting people,
  • being able to buy an investment property for my retirement,
  • being able to have more freedom and work from anywhere in the world,
  • being able to work from home if needed so that I can become a mum one day and have flexible schedule to look after my family,
  • being connected with like-minded and ambitious people who want to thrive …

It was not until early months of this year, when I started to look at my big why a lot more deeply. This was when I discovered what I love about career and performance mentoring, why I love what I do:

  • I absolutely love seeing people’s smile on their face when they talk about their aspirations and passion.Their face lits up!
  • Seeing how one transforms their initial fear and hesitation into awareness of their own greatness and potential touches my heart deeply.
  • It is so refreshing to witness when people free themselves from their limiting beliefs and expectations that they feel constrained under.
  • It empowers me to hear how people discover their hidden talents and do something they never believed they could do. They are touched with their own greatness they have not seen before.
  • It inspires me to work with people on creating and distribution of wealth and resources, leaving them feel confident that they can build and experience successful life even if they go through hardship like losing their income.

So let me ask you a question: What’s your big why?
