I think learning to fail is vital. We are always trying new things, and not all of them work. The trick is to learn from the mistakes and move on..

shares Claire Winter, the content trainer, copy coach and the host of the Cracking Content podcast.

Claire is passionate about helping coaches and creative entrepreneurs to amplify their expertise through storytelling, content and PR so that they can get more sales and make a bigger impact through 1:1 coaching, digital courses and her membership.

She currently writes for all 41 Families magazines covering the UK, which reach 9 million parents a year. She has been a content creator for twenty years and helped thousands of business owners get more sales with their content marketing. She is a trained NCTJ journalist and started her career at ITN in radio and television.

In this interview Claire will share with you her journey, lessons learnt and tips how to make a successful change and start your own freelancing journey.

Where do you come from and where are you based now?

I live in Maidenhead in Berkshire in the UK and was also born here. I also lived in London before I came back to live here.

As a child did you have a dream job?

Yes, I wanted to be an author or journalist.

When and how did you discover direction for your ideal job, career or business?

My first degree was in Social Anthropology, so I loved learning about different people, cultures and religions. I then went on a solo trip around the world, working in India and Australia. When I came back, I decided to do a postgraduate diploma in Broadcast Journalist. I worked at ITN in radio and television. I have also worked in the press office in local government and then went on to own and edit a magazine called Families for eight years.

I have always loved hearing people’s stories and working in journalism has allowed me to share them with the world. Now as a copy coach and trainer I ignite people’s creativity to allow them to share their own story with the content they create and how to amplify it by sharing it on social media and by being featured by the press.

How did you recognize your genius – what are you best at doing in your career or business?

I have always loved writing and people. My ‘genius’ is articulating what people do and igniting their creativity so they can share their light and gifts with the world.

What is your ideal job or position in business now? Why you do what you do right now?

I am a content and copy coach and help female entrepreneurs shine their light in the world through engaging storytelling, content marketing and PR

Work and life balance – what does it mean to you and how do you keep it?

I think it’s being clear on how you spend your time. I now work 3-4 hours a day and time block my diary, so I keep time for exercise and my hobbies like Yoga and Paddleboarding.  During the last year, some of this did go out of the window as we navigated homeschool and lockdowns!

What have you learned on your dream job journey (what was most difficult to overcome)?

  • I think learning to fail well is vital when you are an entrepreneur. We are always trying new things, and not all of them work. The trick is to learn from the mistakes and move on.
  • Having a positive mindset.
  • Doing work that is aligned with your values is also key.

Dream Job Interview with Claire Winter – the host of Cracking Content podcast named one of the top 20 marketing podcasts in the UK

How did you make your career change/starting your business work financially?

I was really lucky to pick up a corporate client when I sold my magazine. It’s a good idea to work on your business idea and work out where you can get clients/sales before making a career change. Networking and referrals are also great ways to get clients.

3 tips you’d give to someone who is right now considering changing jobs, career or starting freelance?

1. Start with your values and make sure that what you choose to do fits with those. I strongly believe children should get access to coaching at schools so they make the right career choices early on in life.

2. Also, know and understand that a career or job choice is not for life. Many people are multi-hyphenate and will do multiple careers or start numerous businesses during their lifetime. For instance, I am also the host of a podcast that was named one of the top 20 marketing podcasts in the UK as well as a content coach and trainer – my dream job.

3. Believe in yourself –  If you believe it – you can do it. You have a unique skill set and story to tell – don’t be afraid to tell it.
